the background doesn't look so bad. I'd put it through photoshop though. raise the contrast some, and make it a larger file size. I can see the pixelization lines.
enough of the digital though.
I still get this feeling that he's going to melt. it's not aparent in the techique though, it's under the surface... what if you took a slightly damp brush and brushed some water into the chalk (specifically the background)? let it melt a little (but not drip too much), just enough to intensify the setting. spray-fix it once it's melted and dried, then maybe attack it with some ink or a fat black marker (like a sir-marks-a-lot)? the idea of the background is very cool, but I'd like to see some texture in there. try to convey that 'killin me braincells' sublime migraine darkness.
also, the frame is cool but it looks like he's looking out a window. I get this feeling of him being very alone, compressed by the dark surrounding, but the border is softening that thought.
ooh ooh got an idea... yeah I'm rambling but after this I swear that's it...
take this and make a larger canvas out of newspaper (like a stock market report, something with small text). position it how you want (I'd go center, bottom, with a lot of negative space at the top), then fill the newspaper with whatever that conveys that overwhelming nihilism that'd make someone want to huff fuel. again, that 'sublime migraine' idea comes to mind. I'd make sure that some of the print on the paper is seen, and I'd collage it in all sorts of directions.
that's it.
your thoughts and ideas are excellent. im gona try and do some stuff you suggested and thank you very much for sharing.
